Oil field
The city of Makinohara is the site of the Pacific coast of Japan's only oil field. Hand-pumping from the Sagara Oil Field began in 1873, and the following year, Nippon Oil opened the first mechanical pumping operation in the country at Sagara. Operations ceased in 1980, and the field is now Yuden no Sato Park, operated by Shizuoka Prefecture (External Link )(External Link ).
